About

The Shanghai International Circuit is a technical masterpiece designed by Hermann Tilke, famous for its layout that mirrors the Chinese character 'shang' (上), meaning "above." Debuting in 2004, it features one of the most grueling opening sequences in F1: a 270-degree "ever-tightening" Turn 1 and 2 that punishes front tires. History was made here in 2019 when the track hosted F1’s 1000th Grand Prix. The circuit is also home to one of the longest straights on the calendar (1.2km), where cars scream at full throttle before a massive braking zone into a hairpin, making it an overtaking hotspot.

Location

Situated in the Jiading District, the circuit is about 30km from downtown Shanghai. Jiading itself is an "Auto City," home to the Shanghai Auto Museum and ancient canals in the Nanxiang district. Shanghai is a global financial hub where the futuristic skyline of Pudong faces the colonial-era buildings of the Bund across the Huangpu River.
Location fact
The team buildings in the paddock are designed to resemble the historic Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai, featuring pavilion-style architecture over a series of ponds.

Travel Information

Airlines: Fly into Shanghai Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA). Major carriers include China Eastern, Air China, and Virgin Atlantic.

Trains: The Shanghai Metro Line 11 is the primary link. Get off at Shanghai Circuit Station. Note that it’s a long ride from the city center (approx. 60–90 mins), so plan accordingly.

Roads: The G15 and S5 motorways connect Jiading to the city. Traffic can be dense, so the Metro is the preferred enthusiast choice.

Local Transport: Shanghai has an incredibly cheap and efficient metro system. A "Shanghai Public Transportation Card" is essential for seamless travel.

Fan Culture, Viewing & Weather

Fan Culture: The local "Zhou Guanyu" fever is immense. Expect a respectful but high-energy crowd that appreciates technical driving.

Best Viewing: Grandstand K at the end of the long straight. You see the cars at their maximum speed before they stand on the brakes for the hairpin.

Weather: Typically cool and humid (11°C–18°C) in March/April. "Gray" skies are common, and light rain often spices up the race strategy.
