About

The Australian Grand Prix, held at the picturesque Albert Park Circuit, is the traditional curtain-raiser for the Formula One season. This semi-permanent street circuit winds around a serene lake, offering a high-speed, flowing layout that drivers adore. The circuit's origins trace back to 1953 for non-championship races, but it officially joined the F1 calendar in 1996, moving from Adelaide. A defining characteristic is its "green" nature; being a public park for 50 weeks of the year, the track surface starts "green" (slippery) and evolves rapidly as rubber is laid down. Historical highlights include the 1996 debut where Martin Brundle’s Jordan famously somersaulted at Turn 3.

Location

Located just south of Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD), the circuit sits between the city and the trendy seaside suburb of St Kilda. Melbourne itself is often voted the world’s most liveable city, known for its vibrant "laneway" culture, world-class coffee, and street art. The local town of St Kilda is famous for its historic pier, Luna Park, and the quirky Acland Street bakeries.
Location fact
Albert Park is home to a colony of black swans that are often seen unfazed by the 200mph machinery screaming past.
