Friday Free Practice 1

This session is a F1 driver's first taste of the Grand Prix circuit all weekend from behind the wheel of his car. Friday Free Practice 1 is a 90 minute session aimed at finding a setup for the cars and a great opportunity for F1 fans to see Formula 1 cars in the flesh at the start of a GP weekend.

Friday Free Practice 2

FP2 is also a 90 minute session and takes place in the afternoon on most circuits. The F1 driver's should be fully up to speed by now and will try to optimise their setups further ahead of the weekend.

Saturday Practice 3

It's qualifying day of the Grand Prix weekend and the drivers and teams are now preparing their cars for the grid deciding session in the afternoon. They get a 1 hour practice session in the morning which traditionally has been used to put in some long runs on the car with simulation race fuel. There is often a last minute dash in the final moments to claim top of the time sheets which gives bragging rights and a nice boost ahead of qualifying.

Qualifying Session

The all important grid decider in split into 3 knockout sessions. The first session is 20 minutes long and involved all 20 cars. Drivers can complete as many laps as they like and at the end of the 20 minutes, the 5 slowest cars are knocked out. The second session is the same however it is only 15 minutes and will decide places 11th to 14th. Ten teams now remain

The final session is a 10 driver, 10 minute shootout to decide the top ten positions and most important, who will be on pole position. Drivers can complete as many laps in this time as they want and usually this will mean 2 flying lap attempts are made.

Race

On Sunday afternoon, the lights go out and all 20 drivers battle it out over and average race time of about 1 hour and 35 minutes. The top 3 drivers will spray the champagne on the podium after the race!
