New F1 points system in 2010

It was interesting that within a matter of days of hearing about a new potential points system for 2010, it has already been passed and implemented for the coming season.

Gone has Bernie Ecclestone’s controversial medal system which was dreamt up and then blocked ahead of the 2009 F1 season. 2010 will just see a new array of points dished out to top 10 finishers, rather than the top 8.

The main reason for this is because 6 extra cars will be competing in the 2010 World Championship. There has to be some extra chances for the slower teams to fight for the all important points.

The gaps between the new points are quite relative to the 2009 system and as worked out on many F1 websites, none of the previous championships dating back to 2000 would have had a different outcome should this new system have existed back then.

So it’s something new for us to learn and get use to, but for me that makes the start of a new Formula 1 season all the more fascinating!
