Michael Schumacher confirms 2010 drive with Mercedes Grand Prix!

Michael Schumacher is back in F1 2010

Today is a truly historic day in Formula 1 history as now Michael Schumacher has confirmed he will race for the Mercedes Grand Prix team in 2010.

The deal is for 1 year only and he will partner Nico Rosberg making it all German team.

It seems fitting that Michael Schumacher should race for Mercedes in Formula 1 as they were the company that paid for him to enter the sport back in 1991.

Michael Schumacher was part of Mercedes young driver programme back in 1990 and 1991. Nearly 20 years later it is likely he will finish his professional career with that same team. Check out the full history of Michael Schumacher's early career for more info.

Key stats Michael Schumacher carries into 2010:

  • He is a 7 times World Champion: 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004
  • He has won 91 F1 races
  • His career points totals 1369
  • He's been on the podium 154 times - many of those included a Schumi leap!
  • He's started on pole position in 68 races.
  • He claimed the fastest lap of the race 76 times.

Michael's legacy and reputation is on the line with this come back, but you couldn't bet against him doing well and increasing on the statistics above, in a team that are reining World Champions and have Ross Brawn in charge. And don't forget he'll have the best engine powering him.

Im just going to type here, what i've typed to my friend in an e-mail. It's great for him, the fans, the drivers and most importantly the sport. After the shambolics that brought us spygate in 2007, crash gate in 2008 and then lie gate in 2009, Schuey's return added to the likes of Lewis, Alonso, Vettel, Button makes it great.

So many top quality drivers it's almost like the 80-90s in terms of great competition. Just think of the drivers who will want to beat Michael, Rubens for a start.

For Schumacher it's very much a case of seeing whether he can still do it, after his career in which was tainted mainly due to his mistakes and also due to how boring it was seeing ferrari dominate (think 2002 and 2004 for depressing seasons when all Schuey had to do was turn up and he'd get pole and an easy race win) partly due to the fact no team could get near them - basically Schuey coming back isn't just for him it's for the sport and for the future which Schuey can help build.

With the manufacturers like BMW, Toyota and even Renault having issues, it's a great time for the sport and Bernie to say 'we're still the best show' and with Schuey there it'll bring money and companies and fans back. It's very much a year of returns. Lotus (although not exactly the old team), Sauber, Silverstone, the Senna name, Massa coming back from his injury, Canada back on the calendar and now Schuey.

It just makes the 2010 season one of the most anticipated seasons, then again we said this last year about 2009 and it started boringly when Jenson and Brawn were unstoppable, however by the end of the year the field was so close. Add in the 4 new teams and young talent like Di Grassi and Hulkenberg (whose racing a guy whose probably as old as his dad). Schuey's return just makes it all the more appealing to watch, i dont think he'll win title, but can see him winning 2-3 races and finihsing 3rd in title.
