Last chance saloon – Button mugs Vettel of victory in Canada
Last lap lock up gifts the race to Button
If you didn’t tune into the Canadian Grand Prix, or switched off due to the two hour delay – then where were you! You missed a cracking Grand Prix in Montreal, albeit a slightly shortened version.
@LeeMcKenzieF1: The race result stands. Stewards take no further action.
The long and short of it is that Jenson Button won the race after Sebastian Vettel went wide at turn 6 – on the last lap. What’s more, Jenson made a whopping 6 pit stops during the rain affected Grand Prix – 5 strategically, whilst 1 was for a drive through penalty.
His pace in the latter stages of the race on the super soft tyre was electric, as he guided his McLaren up to 2nd place with only 4 laps remaining. It almost looked too late to make a charge on Sebastian Vettel who was a few seconds up the road. Button kept at it though and started the last lap only six tenths of a second behind the Red Bull.
It looked like his only chance to grab the victory would be on the back straight, on the approach to the final chicane. But as Vettel turned into turn 6, he was marginally wide with 2 wheels off the dry line. This was enough to cross the Red Bull up, and allowed the persistent Button take the lead. Less than a minute later, the overall victory was his.
This was Jenson Button’s 10th victory – and no doubt his finest. He faced obstacles such as a clash with team mate Lewis Hamilton, taking Alonso out at turn 3 and dodging a wild Mark Webber in the final chicane. His pace was also incredible throughout the GP which enabled him to get into a race winning position.
If you are in the UK, catch the highlights or full rerun of the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix either on the BBC F1 website, or the iPlayer. You won’t reget it. I’ve already watched it myself!
