Key points after the Italian Grand Prix
The result for Monza and what it means
Here are some key pieces of information to digest after today's Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
With Sebastian Vettel winning once again, he obviously extends his points lead in the championship as he charges towards the 2011 world title. His lead is now 112 points over Fernando Alonso, meaning he can win the title at the next round in Singapore. Fernando would have to finish 4th or lower for this to happen. It sounds more than possible doesn't it?
Sebastian appears to have silenced his critics in the last few races and in particular today, that he is not a natural wheel to wheel racer, perhaps like Alonso, Hamilton or Button. Sebastian overtook Fernando Alonso at the incredibly high speed Curva Grande - around the outside of the Ferrari driver. Despite dipping two wheels onto the grass he kept his foot in and had the inside line for the second chicane on the circuit. It was a remarkable move and certainly seals his place as one of the great battlers in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton seemed frustrated with qualifying second yesterday, and will be even more frustrated to finish 4th and off the podium today. His race story was all about being stuck behind Michael Schumacher for the majority of the Grand Prix. Schumacher took the rules of defending a position to the absolute limit after appearing to change his line numerous times whilst keeping Lewis behind him. It seems no action will be taken by the stewards as it was so close to the limit of what is deemed to be ok, but Schumacher will have to watch out for that in the future.
Vettel appeared highly emotional on the podium and on the brink of tears during the national anthems for Germany or Italy. He appeared to whisper to Alonso about how incredible the crowd was along the full length of the pit straight. He confirmed this in the press conference saying the fans and history of the place is like no other. He is surely 2 or 4 weeks away from the World Championship.
Here is the full result of the 2011 Italian Grand Prix result and here is the current championship standings.
