Jonathan Legard’s place at BBC uncertain?

Jonathan Legard was made the BBC commentator for Formula 1 in 2009 when the F1 license was taken over by the BBC from ITV. Legard formerly held commentating positions on the radio and that is evident in his commentating style. He sometimes describes what is happening on track without any regard for the fact that his listeners can see what is going on themselves.

According to the Daily Mail some members of the BBC believe that Legard is 'failing to gel [with co-commentator Martin Brundle] to the extent that doubts are being expressed.” Martin Brundle, who was one of only a couple of the team that were transferred over from ITV to BBC in 2009 is extremely popular and it is noticeable that the pair do not seem to “work” together.

Jonathan Legard often interrupts ex-formula 1 driver Brundle, and also makes some simply stupid comments to which Martin Brundle seems embarrassed of. He is also generally perceived to be unpopular among the fans (even if he isn’t as bad as James Allen). It is reported that Martin Brundle gets on very well with the BBC’s Moto GP commentator Charlie Cox and the Australian may be a possible replacement for Legard next season. But only time will tell.
