Underwhelming Ferrari F150?

Barry Hobart gives his take on the launch of the Ferrari F150 which was unveiled in Maranello on Friday. Check out photos and videos of the launch here: Ferrari F150 launch.

"I love this time of year! Nothing beats the excitement over seeing the teams rip the covers off their new challengers for the year and in classic F1 style there is all the who-ha and pomp and ceremony to go with it. It’s our first real chance to lead a critical eye over the cars and to see how the cars will line up on the grid, who has played it safe and gone with a conservative design and who have been bold enough to come up with something so radical that could lead them to championship glory or total season blow out?

This year we once again begin with Ferrari and the unveiling of the F150. Ferrari wouldn’t have it if someone else would be first to unveil their car before them, it just doesn’t happen! As the two chubby Ferrari pilots (is it me or is Alonso looking more and more like Mario from the Mario brothers when he is in his overalls?) tear off the red cloth, what do we think of the new Fezza?

Well the first thing that springs to mind is, have I accidentally clicked on the 2010 launch pictures because it looks identical to last year’s car. I think the engineers have basically used a piece of tracing paper and copied the 2010 model. Bodywork wise we have a dull nose, no aggressive lines and no shark fin (no doubt that will make an appearance after the fly away races).

Conservative is the name of the game for Ferrari this year. Double diffusers are banned so we don’t even have anything exciting to look at round the back. Livery wise, nothing has changed apart from the Italian flag on the back of the rear wing. This car has been named to mark the 150th anniversary of Italian unification, so the flag is also a fitting tribute to a country that adores its team from Maranello. The only real thing I like on this car is the yellow text on the Pirelli tyres, takes me back to the day’s when Goodyear was the tyre supplier. I wonder how Pirelli will be distinguishing the hard and soft tyres.  Any ideas?

That’s enough of the looks (I’m bored of looking at it) and I shall put my tech hat on. Ferrari is stating that they will be using a push rod system for their rear suspension rather than the new Red Bull pull rod system. If I knew what that meant then I could comment further, but I don’t so I will let Ted Kravitz explain that to me at the first race.

So as Ferrari put the F150 through its paces on a foggy Fiorano circuit, will it deliver what the team so desperately crave, a title for Alonso? Only time will tell, but they cannot afford anymore monumental balls ups like last year, otherwise heads could roll."

I must agree the F150 is very similiar to last years car, but what strikes me is that lack of sponsorship on the car, I notice the Etihad Airways logos have gone, and we now have that new Ferrari logo on the engine cover , which lets face it, is nothing more than Marlboro in disguise, but thats the lot. I agree the yellow Pirelli really takes me back to the good old Goodyear days, will this car run Alonso to the title??? I cant wait to find out.

Who is Barry Hobart? Somebody is offering an opinion on the F150 and they don't know the difference between a push and pull rod suspension...nor have they heard about the way Pirelli will color code the tires. I'm a fan and an engineer, not a writer, but come on!

My reaction that would be, it's terribly easy for an engineer to say "come on".....

Barry Hobart is not an engineer, nor a writer! He is a fan of Formula 1, and this website is for fans of Formula 1 - to write, share and interact with each other.

If you want expert analysis, go to autopsort.com, or as Barry points out, listen out for Ted Kravitz's features on technical insight. That is their profession and what they are paid well to do!

"no shark fin (no doubt that will make an appearance after the fly away races)."

Engine covers can no longer be attached to the rear-wing under FIA regulations for 2011.

My sincere apology. Hail to the fans!

hey Ryan, shark fins haven't always been attatched to the rear wing though? look at all the shark fins in 2008, surely they'd still be legal?

Does Barry Hobart even have eyes??

The 2011 car is no way identical to the 2010 car, one quick look and you'll see that the exhaust ports and the side mirror locations are different.

the exhaust on the 2010 car are on the top of the rear bodywork, on 2011 i think they will still be using the exhaust blown diffuser that is why the exhaust is hidden on the 2011 car.

as for the side mirrors, at the start of the 2010 season teams were allowed to mount side mirrors on the edge of the side pods. mid 2010 all teams were instructed to mount the side mirrors closer to the drivers for safety.

I think clearly there are many noticeable differences between the two cars. The nose of the F150 is clearly raised quite a bit compared to the F10 while it doesn't have the bulge on the nose as the F10 either. Apart from that the sidepods also appear to be different in design on the F150. One thing you'll notice is that the F150 has a curved design on wing assembly when looked from sideways.

Also one thing that I feel is that the nose is a little more extended compared to last year, especially when observed from sideways. You'll get the latest high resolution pics at http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2011/01/29/first-look-at-ferraris-adjustable-rear-wing-in-action/

looking at the on track photos, i think the raised nose becomes slightly more obvious

interesting Etihad have departed Ferrari, I thought they might have been in for the long haul (if you'll excuse the pun)
