Hungarian Grand Prix Preview

The Hungarian Grand Prix does not always produce the closest racing in Formula One but there are still seven reasons to look forward to the race on Sunday.

Felipe Massa's reaction to Ferrari’s tactics in the last race will be fascinating. It would be very understandable if the Brazilian was lacking in motivation but he might also be out to prove a point by giving Alonso another drubbing. Either way, he is likely to be very emotional at the venue that changed his life forever last year.

Rain is predicted on Friday and Saturday and this could significantly mix up the grid. The leading teams don’t have a good track record in the last few wet qualifying sessions so a bit of changeable weather could create an exciting Grand Prix. At the very least it should prevent the front-runners from perfecting their set ups.

Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are on equal points heading into the race and both will be desperate to become the ‘number one’ Red Bull driver in the championship. This proved crucial at Silverstone and may do so again later in the year.

McLaren was not as quick as expected in Silverstone and the silver cars were even further off the pace at Hockenheim. If they struggle once again this weekend the gap at the top of the championship is going to become very close.

The start and first lap at Hungary is always unpredictable. The track surface is very dirty offline and this greatly impedes anyone who qualifies on an even grid slot. Also, since overtaking is very difficult at the circuit, some drivers will be looking to make a desperate manoeuvre in the frantic opening stages.

The Hungarian Grand Prix may prove to be an exciting tactical race. The circuit will be hard on tyres, especially if Sunday afternoon is hot, so we might see some interesting strategies because overtaking is otherwise very difficult.

The Hungaroring shares many circuit characteristics with Monaco so the track will likely suit some cars that have struggled everywhere else. Robert Kubica qualified on the front row at Monaco so may find that Renault have a better than usual performance this weekend. Other teams will be hoping the unique twisty, dirty, high downforce layout gives them an advantage over their closest rivals.
