How will Vettel celebrate the title? Here’s how Damon and Schumi did it...
Will Vettel grab the title in Suzuka?
For some strange reason, there is an overwhelming sense that Sebastian Vettel will become the youngest double World Champion this weekend in Suzuka. Could it be the likelihood of him achieving the single point he needs, or the unlikelihood of Jenson Button also having to win the race and the other remaining 4 to stop him?!
The championship is curtains as far as we’re all concerned, so how will Sebastian go about celebrating it at the legendary circuit if all goes his way? He’s not much of a drinker, but perhaps he’ll let his hair down on what will be a momentous occasion.
A splash of Dutch courage may in fact be necessary if the party ends up in the famous “The Log Cabin” karaoke bar, at the Suzuka's Circuit Hotel. This is the place that has seen plenty of Formula 1 action over the years, albeit all off track! MetroF1 writer, Adam Hay-Nicholls described it in 2009 on his popular blog:
“As well as the alpine style bar there are half a dozen small wooden cabins, that look like garden sheds, each with a TV and karaoke system. The most popular cabin had been hired by David Coulthard and Martin Brundle, and the place was rocking from side to side as we jumped up and down inside.
There aren’t many opportunities to get a glimpse of this special place, but footage does exist. If you wait long enough after the credits on Damon Hill’s “Fight for Victory” video (and yes I mean a VHS!), there’s some great moments from Hill’s 1996 World Championship celebrations.
“Who do you think you are kidding Michael Schumacher, if you think old Damon’s done!”These good natured celebrations are in stark contrast to some of Michael Schumacher’s, who enjoyed clinching his 6th World Championship at Suzuka in 2003. He seemingly went on a massive rampage at the circuit – trashing some Toyota hospitality in an open shirt, smoking a massive cigar and generally looking and acting pretty wrecked! I’m pretty sure something ended up going through a window as well... perhaps it was that fridge again!
However Sebastian Vettel chooses to celebrate his 2nd World Title, I think anyone would struggle to suggest he doesn’t deserve it.
