Hamilton’s track record of the ‘Spin and Dodge’! Heart stopping video
This wasn’t Lewis’s first time!
We’ve all heard of the ‘Schumi Chop’ – Michael Schumacher’s desperate attempts to keep cars behind him at all costs which have taken place over his long career. It now seems Lewis Hamilton wants his own trade mark move which I’m going to call the ‘Spin and Dodge’.
He received a drive through penalty in today’s Hungarian Grand Prix for forcing Paul di Resta off the circuit after spinning his car on the exit of the turn 8 and 9 chicane. Rather than wait for all cars to pass, Hamilton lit the tyres up at the first opportunity and swung his McLaren across the racing line, forcing di Resta to take evasive action.
I’m a massive Lewis Hamilton fan and obviously the drive through penalty further wrecked his race, but I believe the penalty was justified, based on how serious a head on collision could have been for both drivers. I don’t resent him for doing it though as you can imagine how desperate he would have been in that split second moment to retain his lead. But in circumstances like that, safety should come first so I think a good overall message has gone out there.
As that dramatic moment unfolded, it instantly struck me how similar it was to an incident back in 2006, when Lewis was driving in a GP2 race at Istanbul. He spun on the second lap of the race and without hesitation got straight back on the power, with cars approaching him just meters away. Check out the video below for a heart stopping moment!
That race was actually one of his finest, after he managed to work his way all the way up to 2nd place, behind Nelson Piquet Jr. No mean feat considering all the cars are utterly identical in GP2. That race undoubtedly played a huge part of Ron Denis’s decision to put Hamilton into the McLaren seat for the 2007 F1 season. It was sublime!
Will we ever see the ‘Spin and Dodge’ again? I’m not sure. Lewis Hamilton will certainly not be planning on spinning so casually again though, that is guaranteed.

Thanks for the footage! Great to see how Hammy came through the ranks. Too bad about Piquet Jnr - he was set for big things too.

Oh, yes. A drive-thru is justified since a head on collision could have happened. Do you realize how absurd this sounds? If Hamilton is not black-flagged when doing things like this, a head on collision is going to be nothing compared to what's coming...
