Is Sebastian Vettel’s domination spoiling F1 in 2011?

Of the eight Grands Prix contested so far in 2011, Sebastian Vettel has won six of them and has scored second place results in the other two. It is a remarkable start to the season and it would take a huge change in fortune for the young German to be denied a second consecutive World Championship.

As he marches relentlessly towards the title, is Sebastian Vettel’s domination spoiling what could be a great year of Formula One?

The case for Vettel spoiling the 2011 season

Yawn. It’s boring to watch the same driver continuously winning and it’s a shame the sport isn’t more competitive. The quality of racing in Formula One is very exciting this year but the end results are predictable and there is nothing at all compelling about the championship battle. The title will be almost over by mid-season and that removes a key piece of entertainment from the sport. Even an exciting Grand Prix is missing something if it isn’t held in the context a championship fight – almost like a dead rubber event – and the 2011 race are heading down that path.

The case against Vettel spoiling the 2011 season

The very reason we tune into world-class sport is to watch competitors performing at their very best, and at the moment Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull are doing exactly that. It’s genuinely special to watch an athlete getting close to perfection and taking the best possible results because it’s a rare occurrence. There is also huge interest now in the challenge to beat Vettel. There will be massive excitement when another driver topples him in a straight fight (like Jenson Button did in Canada) and that simply wouldn’t be the case if the wins were being shared around. Besides, several of his victories were close anyway so his ‘domination’ isn’t actually that bad.

This season is still a awesome season! out of nothing the 20 odd seasons of watching F1 was or ever could be as boring as 2009. There is nothing worse then seing a average driver win a world title (Jenson Button). I live for F1 but i hav2 admit even that season i stopped watching F1.

Haha a bold statement to call him an average driver. Jenson doesn't excite me as a driver in the dry, it's only when the track conditions are tricky, he seems to have a much better sense than everyone else and can pull off these awesome wins.

But yeah, the first half of 2009 was a white wash! Thank god cracks appeared in Brawn's armour mid season.

Is Sebastian Vettel's domination spoiling F1 in 2011?

Turn that around... Is everyone else's lack of pace/development spoining F1 in 2011? I think so.

Yeah I like that spin on it. It's all too easy to blame Vettel and even show some dislike towards him, based purely on his success which is madness! Frustration should be vented at the other teams poor job...

To a large extent, yes it is. However i don't think it is a Sebastian Vettel domination as much as Red Bull being in a class above the rest.

It's up to McLaren and Ferrari to equip their drivers with a more competitive piece of machinery in order for them to challenge him. We all know how quick someones fortunes can change in formula 1, so anybody writing F1 2011 off this early would be foolish.

With that said if Red Bull remain untouchable at the front, we will be seeing some empty stands in the latter stages of the season.

Car is too good. Leading a procession is hardly a sports event. Boring. Although watching Schumacher and Hamilton fight it out in Italy was fun.

As much of a Hamilton fan as I am, I did find it a real point of interest watching him struggle behind Schumi during that race. Seeing as Vettel was romping it once again!

The frustration of Hamilton tailing Michael down the main straight, then that Mercedes GP 7th gear edging out a gap made my heart race!!

sebastian vettel is the best and will remain the best, lots of people are jealous of any guy who's on top.. even Mark Webber has got the chance to outpace him in the same car, but why cant he? if vettel is driving remarkably well why should we speak ill of him instead why not give him credit for his efforts. and having said that half the people who are complaining are not f1 fans but ferrari or mclaren fan merely

I might be on my own here, but I quite like watching a great sportsman or team getting really close to perfection. I can find that just as entertaining as a close contest between two lesser opponents. Now that Red Bull is getting the best possible results, it means that someone beating Vettel will now be a huge achievement rather than just another win. If a McLaren driver wins at Silverstone it will be an epic victory against the very best in F1, and that's something pretty special. Although I'd certainly prefer to have a closer championship fight, I'm not yet convinced that Vettel's good results are spoiling the season.

I tend to agree in that if one person is going to dominate, we can't change it so we might as well try and embrace it.

Saying that though, my ultimate feeling is of wishing McLaren and Ferrari were fighting for victories more often.

I like the thought of McLaren and Ferrari fighting each other for victory. Button Vs Alonso in 2010 on home soil for Ferrari was a classic. Different setups and who blinked first - I enjoyed that race a lot. (once I'd gotten over Lewis!)

As I posted on Twitter, I believe Vettel's domination IS spoiling F1 this year primarily because (as much as I admire Newey's design ingenuity) it wouldn't be exciting to watch the sport with several races to go, just to find out who come 2nd in the WDC.

2008 was a FANTASTIC F1 season because of the drama right till the last corner of the last lap. Even last year had 4 potential winners by the last race.

Abu Dhabi and Brazil GP owners must be praying someone can dent the big margin Vettel has built up and give us something to tune in for by October. For the record, I have nothing against Vettel - he's a worthy 2010 WDC.
