Safety Car: It’s In

PROOF! There is now 100% proof that Codemasters are including a safety car feature into their up and coming title, F1 2011. The news was broken on twitter this morning as Andy Gray tweeted “Hang on, what's this? That's right, the SAFETY CAR IS IN!!!” Further confirmation came from Chief Game Designer, Steve Hood as he tweeted “Okay, okay... Safety Car is in this years game. That's what Jeal caused in the Race II :) Going to be awesome!!

Here are some pictures that have surfaced online that show the Mercedes SLS in all its glory:

Andy Gray is doing his best to answer the numerous related questions going his way and here are his responses so far:

“Okay lets answer a few SC Qs: Yes it is real, no you cannot drive it, it is available online, you keep the same camera when the SC is out.”

“To answer another question: yes you have control behind the SC but there'll be some restrictions. More details once everything is concrete.”

"Safety Car is available in races 20% or over and can be turned off if you don't want it."

There are obviously plenty more questions that need answering, such as: is tyre warming and brake warming essential behind it? Is that a set lap time you have to stick to when catching up the safety car, can the pack be backed up like in real life? Something tells me there will be compromises with what happens in real life but this a great addition to the game and will no doubt be improved in future titles.

It marks another exciting moment in the build up to the release of F1 2011 – schedule for September 23rd.

On Sunday night, the second Developer Diary video came out and showed just how much work has gone into handling improvements and AI behaviour changes. The game seems to be a real step up from F1 2010, which was well received in its own right.

News of where and how you can pre-order F1 2011 will be announced here shortly.
