F1 2010: A week later
"The best F1 game I have ever played"
A few niggles
The pit-stop in Formula 1 is an essential part of any strategy and in some races the only chance some will get to overtake or stay ahead of their rivals around them on the track. However, in Codemasters’ F1 2010, the pit-stops are pretty poor. The lollypop man waits for everyone behind you to leave the pit before he let’s you out! For example, you enter the pit lane at the same time as Adrian Sutil but he is behind you. You both enter the pit box at the same time but (and here is the problem) instead of letting you out instantly to stay ahead of Sutil, the game mechanics means that the lollypop man will let him and everyone else that has left their pit behind you through loosing you up to 5 positions. This needs to be sorted out.
The damage on the cars is something Codies have boasted about on the lead up to the game but I can not help feel that it is a really poor simulation of actual F1 damage. The front wing shatters now and again but trying to take a tyre off is next to impossible. Just to test the damage system I had a 200 MPH crash with the left front tyre taking the hit into a metal barrier only for the wheel to remain exactly where it was. The damage is unrealistic, what they have in the way of damage looks pretty, such as the front wing snapping the tyres getting punctures and little bits of carbon flying into the air when you ram a car in front of you but it is ultimately unrealistic and something that should be changed for 2011.
The big picture
Having added these two bad points to my review I still would not lower my score of 8/10. These are small problems, the pit-stops will probably be fixed and the damage is not that much of a defecit in the grand scale of things. The game is still a must buy and I love it. It is the best F1 game I have ever played (Certainly better than F1: Championship Edition) and will keep me busy for the next year until F1 2011 comes out. It is a shame that due to the natures of the sport that the game can not come out earlier in the season but that is something we will have to deal with.
