European Grand Prix Preview

The city of Valencia will host its third Grand Prix in 2010, and although the previous two races have not been overly exciting, there are still a number of reasons to look forward to this weekend's Grand Prix.

  • The Valencia street circuit is another venue that will not suit Red Bull, and whilst their car will be quick anywhere, the battle at the front should be very close.
  • Ferrari IS introducing a massive upgrade which they hope will make them competitive against Red Bull and McLaren. With Alonso close to the championship leaders, it could be the defining race of Ferrari's season.
  • Valencia is a fast street circuit which is something of a novelty. The sweeping curves near the end of the lap are quite exciting and the drivers will have to respect a few close walls in some places.
  • Paul Di Resta will be driving in Friday's practice session. A good performance from the young Scot will place more pressure on Vitantonio Liuzzi heading towards 2011 contract time.
  • If you ignore the industrial areas directly opposite the circuit, the location of the track between the city of Valencia and the beach is fantastic. It's the closest thing Formula One has to the iconic 'Surfers Paradise' race that used to be such a big highlight on the Indycar calendar. Also, the race organisers have painted the circuit's less attractive surroundings to make the venue more appealing on TV, so it will be interesting to see what effect (if any) a bit of green paint has.
  • If all else fails, the last two races at Valencia have been a little boring - so it's due for a good one!
