Do you like the sounds of F1 turbos? Sounds and videos included!
The grunt is coming!
So from 2013, the 2.4 litre V8 engines currently is use will be replaced with 1.6 litre turbos the FIA has announced. This will be the first time turbos have been used in F1 for 25 years!
Many fans were unhappy when F1 scrapped the V10 engines in favour of smaller V8 in 2006. The fact they were then rev limited as well meant the days of screaming F1 engines and the ‘buzz’ they use to produce in the 90’s was over. But the V8 is still quite spectacular...
The question is, what do you think of the sounds produced by F1 turbo engines? Here are some videos of F1 turbos in action. I personally prefer screeching high pitched engines but these do have some serious grunt, I’ll give them that!

When I think of F1 Turbos - I instantly think of the big, wide F1 cars of the 80's, the huge slick tyres and a fair bit of the driver on show from the outside.
Imagining a turbo is the current style, sleek and slender F1 cars hasn't sunk in it!

I quite like the sound of the older F1 turbos - they're a bit like a high revving muscle car. Hopefully the FIA puts some effort into making sure the new spec engines have a decent exhaust note because they have the potential to make them sound fantastic.
