Affirmative: Sebastian Vettel wins the 2011 World Championship at Suzuka!
Weltmeister! Vettel is the World Champion
He may not have won the race, but Sebastian Vettel has predictably taken the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship with four rounds still to go. In doing so he becomes the youngest double World Champion in the sports 61 year history. He came home in 3rd position, behind Fernando Alonso in 2nd and Jenson Button who took a decent victory for McLaren. The three cars were separated by less than 2 seconds as they crossed the line after a nail biting finish.
It marks the end of the “will he do it” and “can he do it” questions Sebastian has had to answer all weekend in Japan. He has finished in the points at every race in 2011 and that’s all he had to do today to take the title.
He led from the start but got jumped by Button after the second round of pit stops. Fernando Alonso also managed the same feat after the third and final set of stops demoting him to the bottom of the podium places.
Full result and classification from the Japanese Grand Prix is here.
