Valencia will not be the first area of Spain to host a Formula One street race. In the seventies the Spanish Grand Prix was run four times at the Montjuïc circuit on a hill that overlooked Barcelona’s harbour. The circuit ran through parkland was particularly fast, although this made it rather dangerous. The track was abandoned in 1975 after an accident killed five spectators. Interestingly each of the four races held there was won by a car with a Ford engine, something that will be impossible in 2008. The race at Valencia will be known as the ‘European Grand Prix’ which was first used as a title back in 1923. Niki Lauda is the only multiple Formula One world Champion not to have won a race dubbed the ‘European Grand Prix’.
