The first ‘Grand Prix’ to be held in Singapore was run back in 1961 but was for Formula Libre cars only. The race was run annually but only became known as the Singapore Grand Prix in 1966 when the country gained independence from Malaysia. The first street circuit at Thomson Road was very fast and included two extremely tight hairpins either end of a mile long straight, something Herman Tilke has since made popular. The race continued until the seventies when it was cancelled after a series of fatal crashes. The final race was won in 1973 by Former F1 driver and Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan.
